For the first time, Arizona State hockey has acknowledged defenseman Matthew Mayich collapsing after an outdoor team workout with an X post:

The post reads "Thinking of you 27," which is his number. The post then contains a graphic with his picture and a message that reads: "Matthew — your ASU teammates and the entire Sun Devil community are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."
The incident took place Aug. 20, which was the first day of fall semester classes. The 50-minute workout was led by an ex-Green Beret Tim Ziesel. Per a lawyer for Mayich's family, Arizona State University has not properly investigated what happened, as Ziesel put the team
through "grueling" drills.
Robert Carey, the lawyer for Mayich's family, says that Mayich has "zero chance of recovery."
ASU hockey head coach Greg Powers asked Ziesel to lead the workout, and Ziesel's lawyer described the workout "as mid-level intensity similar to any high-school football team conditioning routine," per The Arizona Republic reporter Robert Anglen.
Mayich, who is 21 years old, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft. He remains in a coma.
