SAN DIEGO — Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes will not make his scheduled start against the San Diego Padres on Saturday, Sept. 26, and instead will head to the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, sources said on Friday, Sept. 25.
The Diamondbacks have not determined who will start in Burnes’ place, though right-hander Ryne Nelson likely will factor into things, either as the starter or as a bulk reliever. If the club’s postseason hopes are still alive, the Diamondbacks almost certainly will have an all-hands-on-deck approach to the game.
Right-hander Brandon Pfaadt is scheduled to start Friday's series opener, with right-hander Michael Soroka set to take the ball in the final game of the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 27.
Burnes
was working with diminished velocity last weekend against the New York Yankees when he served up three homers during a four-batter stretch in the third inning. He has allowed five homers over his past two starts.
He made just three starts in his return from the injured list, giving up nine runs in 10 1/3 innings. Burnes missed the majority of the year as he worked his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery. He also dealt with a shoulder issue.
