There might be a change of plans for many flyers today, as of Monday, Oct. 12; delays and the most relevant Federal Aviation Administration information point to possible airspace and air-traffic-flow constraints around Phoenix.
The FAA’s operations plan for Oct. 12 identifies the possibility of thunderstorms affecting the Phoenix airspace and strong, gusty winds and severe weather conditions, with rerouting and arrival-route adjustments planned for later in the day.
The FAA’s live delay page also specifically reports PHX departure delays of 16–30 minutes and increasing. Travelers should check their airline’s flight status for the most accurate information about their specific trip.
Are there any current delays at Phoenix Airport?
Yes, according to Flight Aware, there have been 130 flight delays
and three cancellations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Travelers were experiencing disruptions, although flight-status totals can change throughout the day as airlines update their schedules and new delays or cancellations occur.
How long can an airline keep delaying a flight?
There is no single federal time limit on how long an airline can delay a flight before it must cancel it. An airline may delay a flight for hours while waiting for weather to improve, resolving a mechanical issue or complying with air traffic control restrictions.
However, separate federal protections apply when passengers are kept aboard an aircraft on the tarmac. For covered flights, airlines generally must provide passengers an opportunity to get off the aircraft before a tarmac delay exceeds three hours for domestic flights or four hours for international flights, subject to safety, security and air traffic control exceptions.
Airlines must also provide food and water within two hours of a tarmac delay, subject to applicable safety exceptions.
