Fall has returned to Arizona, and there’s plenty of activity, including college sports and the continuation of the seasons for the Phoenix Mercury and Phoenix Rising FC. Here are updates on sports news and events happening around Arizona.
Toronto Maple Leafs to hold open practice at Mullett Arena
The Toronto Maple Leafs are headed to Arizona for a special trip during their training camp.
The Leafs will land in Phoenix on Sept. 24 and will remain in the area through Saturday, Sept. 26. They will host an open practice at Mullett Arena.
The Leafs have two players on the roster from Arizona, including captain Auston Matthews, who is from Scottsdale, and Phoenix’s Matthew Knies. General manager John Chayka, a former GM of the Arizona Coyotes, still has a residence in Arizona.
Matthews will host his teammates
at his offseason home, while Chayka will host the staff at his home.
“It’s meaningful to Auston: hometown,” Chayka said. “This is all about getting to know each other better and spending meaningful time together. So, for him, it’s an opportunity to show guys where he grew up and what he means to the community there. And, obviously, nice weather, a chance for guys to go and be themselves and spend some time together.”
