The Diamondbacks on Sunday, Aug. 16 called up right-handed reliever Dennis Santana from Triple-A Reno, and designated left-hander Philip Abner for assignment a day after Abner appeared in the team's 10-3 win over Atlanta.
Santana, 30, agreed to terms with the Diamondbacks on a one-year minor league free agent contract. He was with the Pirates and was designated for assignment on July 23, then released on July 29. He made two relief appearances for Reno.
Santana is in his ninth major league season and has appeared in 319 career games with the Dodgers, Rangers, Mets, Yankees and Pirates.

At Chase Field: Soroka returned from the injured list to turn in 4
1/3 innings of scoreless baseball against the Rockies in what was a 9-0 victory. … He missed more than six weeks with a glute injury. … Soroka will be facing his former team, the club that drafted him 28th overall in 2015. … He has started against the Braves twice, giving up a combined three runs in nine innings. He faced them earlier this year, giving up one run in five innings. … Elder was incredible to start the year, logging a 1.97 ERA through 11 starts. He has been far less effective since, posting a 6.29 ERA over his past 12 outings. … Elder dominated the Diamondbacks on April 4 – matching up with Soroka, in fact – and gave up just two unearned runs over seven innings. … He averages in the low-90s with his fastball and sinker while relying on his slider for whiffs. He also throws a cutter and changeup.
