The Phoenix man charged with killing one person and critically wounding another in Old Town Scottsdale argued with the pair minutes earlier, retrieved a gun from his car and resumed a fight at least partially caught on security cameras.
Jeremy La’Twan Campbell Jr. is facing charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault from the Sept. 6 incident that happened after 1 a.m. between the Bottle Blonde and Pretty Please nightclubs.
Police still haven’t identified the two men who are brothers who were shot in the incident. The man who died, however, said “he did not know what happened,” before he succumbed to his wounds, police said.
The other man, also shot in the chest, was expected to survive but could not speak because of treatment for his
wounds.
Investigators may have linked Campbell, 22, to a 10mm Glock pistol found in a nearby Best Western hotel swimming pool, police records show.
Campbell had a magazine for such a gun in his pocket when police tased and arrested him. They also found another magazine and a backplate for the gun in his car. The backplate was replaced with a switch, making it fully automatic at the time of the shooting, police noted.
Later, when police went to search his Phoenix residence, investigators saw a car leaving with several people in it. Police searched that car and found a case for a 10mm Glock with a serial number matching the weapon found in the pool, police wrote. It was unclear whether police intend to file charges against that group.
Minutes before the shooting, police broke up an altercation involving Campbell “antagonizing” the two other men and two women with them, records show. Security camera footage suggested Campbell “initiated the altercation.” That’s when investigators said Campbell went to get his gun and returned to the victims’ nearby car and resumed the fight.
“Ten to twenty minutes later, they were standing by the Buick station wagon when (Campbell) was observed standing at their vehicle and began to antagonize the group again,” police wrote.
The wounded man argued with Campbell, who responded by throwing punches, then gunfire broke out, police said. Security cameras in the area captured the beginning of the fight, which became obstructed by a party bus. Shortly afterward, the man who died staggered back into view of the camera and collapsed.
