A man who fled after a fatal car crash in 2024 on Loop 202 in Tempe was identified and arrested after a lengthy investigation.
Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a crash shortly before 3 a.m. Nov. 3, 2024, on westbound State Route 202, according to a DPS news release.
Investigators determined a 2019 Dodge Journey had struck a 2015 Honda Pilot from behind at approximately 96 mph, the statement said. The collision forced the Honda into the median before it came to rest blocking the roadway, the statement said.
An 2017 Audi Q7 struck the disabled Honda, and later a 2018 Ford Focus struck the Audi, the statement said.
The chain-reaction crash resulted in one fatality and two people suffering serious injuries, the statement said.
DPS Vehicular Crimes Unit detectives reviewed surveillance footage, physical evidence, vehicle data and witness statements.
Detectives were able to use the evidence to identify the suspect as Deone Xavier Holland, 37, as the driver of the Dodge Journey. He was accused of leaving the collision scene and failing to call for emergency assistance, the statement said.
Holland was arrested on a grand jury warrant on Sept. 3. He was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal collision and endangerment, the statement said.
