Two days after a deadly flash flood swept down Bright Angel Canyon, into the Grand Canyon, Republic climate reporter Joan Meiners hiked down the South Kaibab Trail to see the damage firsthand. The trail itself was muddy, with standing water in places. Rain fell intermittently during the day. Joan encountered few other hikers and, as she neared the bottom, saw the destructive power of a sudden burst of rain washing through the Dragon Bravo Fire scar up on the North Rim. She saw a footbridge lying in the rubble near the confluence of Bright Angel Creek and the Colorado River, and the remains of what appeared to be most of a building in the middle of the river.
