The headquarters of the Phoenix Police Department downtown is closed due to a "major water leak" that damaged several floors of the building.
The 27-story building at First Avenue and Washington Street,
the former Wells Fargo tower, waspurchased by the city for $46.5 million in 2021 and underwent a renovation that the city said would cost $180 million. That was completed this year, and a grand opening ceremony was held March 27, 2026 .
Police personnel will work from "alternate sites" during the closure, according to a news release from Phoenix police. There was no time estimate given for when the building would reopen. The Public Works Department and Fire Department were repairing the damage to the structure, police said.
The building houses about 1,000 employees and three stories are dedicated to the 911 dispatch center. The public records unit was damaged, police said, and police advised the public to use an online portal for requests, including those related to towing and alarms. The portal is at https://phxpublicsafety.phoenix.gov/.
