The Diamondbacks designated Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment on Sunday, Sept. 13, potentially parting ways with their longtime left fielder.
Gurriel, 32, was hitting just .210/.254/.290 with two homers in 186 at-bats this season. He seemed never to regain his form at the plate after suffering a brutal right knee injury last season.
Taking Gurriel’s place on the roster is infielder Jose Fernandez, who was recalled from Triple-A Reno.
Gurriel came to the Diamondbacks before the 2023 season along with catcher Gabriel Moreno as part of the deal with the Toronto Blue Jays for outfielder Daulton Varsho.
He served as a stable member of the lineup for most of the past three seasons; in 2023 and 2024, he hit a combined .270/.315/.449 with 42 homers.
Gurriel
signed a three-year, $42 million contract ahead of the 2024 season. He will be owed a $5 million buyout on a $14 million team option for next year.

At Chase Field: Rodriguez is going to end up the Diamondbacks' leader in wins this season, and is coming off a win in his last start on Sept. 6 when he allowed a run on three hits in six innings. ... Rodriguez is set for his 30th start of the season, which will surpass his total of 29 from last season and will be the most starts he's made since the 31 he posted in 2021. ... Rodriguez will also end up as the Diamondbacks' innings leader and likely strikeouts leader. He is 4-1 with a 5.08 ERA in seven career starts against Texas. ... Quantrill has been a starter and reliever this season for Texas and has pitched well. He has won four of his past five starts since late June for the Rangers. Quantrill is 2-3 with a 5.68 ERA in nine career games against Arizona.
