Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs has picked John Giles, a Republican and former Mesa mayor, as her running mate in Arizona's contentious gubernatorial race, according to a report from the New York Times.

Giles led the Phoenix suburb for more than a decade

, and ended up in the national spotlight after urging the state's Republicans to vote against Donald Trump in favor of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

Giles endorsed Hobbs ahead of her 2022 electoral victory over Republican Kari Lake. He joined a contingent of GOP leaders who campaigned on her behalf, and stood with her at various points in her governorship.

Hobbs' campaign manager, Nicole DeMont, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Hobbs' choice for lieutenant

governor.

The report came soon after Hobbs announced the "Arizona Over Party" coalition, which consists of more than 50 current and former Republican and independent leaders. Her campaign said the group was a sign of her commitment to earn the vote of every Arizonan, in spite of party affiliation.
