Chandler Fire Department officials said two high school runners were taken to the hospital for heat-related illness during a running meet at Tumbleweed Park on Aug. 29.
About 9:25 a.m., a fire crew already on medical standby for a high school cross-country meet at the park called for more help after finding it had multiple patients to treat, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Chapman said in an email.
Crews took two runners to a hospital for symptoms of heat-related illness, but an update on their condition was not immediately available, according to Chapman.
Two other runners and one adult at the meet, experiencing similar symptoms, were treated at the scene and released, Chapman said.
The illnesses came as Chandler remained under an extreme heat warning.
It was 100 degrees when crews called for help, according to the National Weather Service.
The park is located near near Germann and McQueen roads.
The Chandler incident came nine days after Tempe firefighters responded to an Arizona State University track for a reported heat-related illness during an outdoor hockey workout.
Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old player on the university's hockey team, collapsed, was hospitalized and entered a coma after what family and friends described as a cardiac event.
