Torey Lovullo will return for an 11th season with the Diamondbacks.
The club will retain its longtime manager despite missing the playoffs for a third consecutive year and for the eighth time in his 10 years on the job.
Lovullo, 61, will receive a two-year deal, according to a source, which lines him up with general manager Mike Hazen, whose deal runs through 2028.
Lovullo continues his Diamondbacks tenure as the winningest manager in franchise history. He was at the helm for the organization’s second trip to the World Series in 2023. He finishes with a 750-767 record in 10 years.
The Diamondbacks fell short of a playoff spot this year for the third consecutive season, finishing two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies.
Lovullo joined the Diamondbacks
ahead of the 2017 season, brought on board by Hazen shortly after Hazen was named the general manager in October 2016.
The Diamondbacks reached the postseason the next year, winning 93 games to claim a wild-card spot in 2017. They missed the playoffs each of the next five seasons, including in 2021, when the team lost 110 games.
The Diamondbacks won just 84 games in 2023 to claim the last wild-card spot before going on a Cinderella run through the postseason. They beat the Milwaukee Brewers in the wild-card round, swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division series, then came back from a three-games-to-two deficit in the league championship series to take down the Phillies to advance to the World Series, where they were beaten in five games by the Texas Rangers.
The Diamondbacks fell one game shy of a wild-card spot in 2024, losing out on a tiebreaker to the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves.
Known for his strong communication skills and laid-back style, Lovullo, who came up as a coach in player development, has a reputation for helping young players reach the major leagues.
He has drawn criticism in recent years for his handling of star second baseman Ketel Marte, whom detractors believe Lovullo has not handled sternly enough. Marte has irked teammates for not showing up for games — he has twice been placed on the restricted list for being away from the team — and for needing days off in critical games.
