Fire Department divers searching for body in Tempe Town Lake

Tempe Fire Department sent dive crews to Tempe Town Lake in response to reports of a person going underwater near the Rural Road Bridge.

Tempe fire and police departments responded around 1 a.m., Joe Escontreas, Tempe Fire Medical Rescue assistant chief, said.

The departments searched until they transitioned the operation from a rescue to a recovery operation, Escontreas said in a written statement.

The body was not recovered as of around 10 a.m. Sept. 7, the time when Tempe Fire Medical Rescue dive crews went into the lake, Escontreas said.

The department did not know why the person went into the water because it did not recover evidence in the area, Escontreas said.

Witnesses told authorities the person went underwater near the Rural Road Bridge,
