A powerful storm system is expected to move through Arizona on Oct. 21 and through the overnight, bringing with it the potential for heavy rain, hail, high winds and even the chance of a tornado.
Forecasters said the system is climatologically rare and a “well-above-typical risk for severe storms is expected, potentially including all severe hazards." It's the result of a low pressure trough off the coast of California, coupled with abundant tropical and subtropical moisture entering the state from the south.
Storm activity is forecast to pick up through the day Wednesday, though rain and hail were reported late Tuesday night in the East Valley. "This activity," the National Weather Service said in its forecast discussion early Wednesday, "was
just an appetizer of what is likely to transpire during the next couple of days."
A tornado warning was issued for Flagstaff Wednesday morning as strong storms moved across northern Arizona.
