The Phoenix Suns are signing big man Duop Reath, who most recently spent nearly three seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, ESPN's Shams Charania reported late Wednesday, Sept. 16.
The deal comes less than a week after the Suns announced Mark Williams, who was expected to be the starting center, had undergone surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder sustained during an off-season workout.
Reath was with the Blazers from 2023-26. Last season, he appeared in just 32 games with Portland,
averaging less than 3 points and two rebounds a game, along with 8 minutes a game. He underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot in January.
His best season with the Blazers was 2023-24, when he appeared in 68 games and averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 rebounds a game.
He was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in February and later waived.
Williams is expected to miss an extended period of time recovering from the surgery. Other NBA players who have undergone similar surgery returned to competition after six months.
The 6-foot-9-inch, 245-pound Reath adds depth at center, where the Suns also have second-year player Khaman Maluach and Oso Ighodaro, who appeared in all 82 games last season.
