More than 20 people were missing or unaccounted for after devastating flash flooding at the Grand Canyon, according to the National Park Service.
Around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29, a significant flash flood hit the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch area, creating the need for several helicopter evacuation missions, the park service said.
Although 62 people were evacuated, more than 20 people were still unaccounted for, as of Aug. 30
"If you know of hikers or backpackers who were in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29, or if you had a campground reservation in the affected area, please contact the NPS Investigative Services Branch (ISB)," The Grand Canyon National Park said in a Facebook post.
Missing people may have been traveling or staying
in the following locations, according to the park service:
• Staying at Bright Angel Campground or Cottonwood Campground
• Traveling the North Kaibab Trail from the North Kaibab Trailhead to Phantom Ranch
• Traveling through “the Box” north of Phantom Ranch
The public was asked to provide any information possible, including the person's name, approximate location, travel plans, group size, clothing or backpack description, or when they were last known to be in the area, the park service said.
