A third man was taken into custody in connection with the deadly shooting of a Tucson police recruit on Aug. 30 at the Douglas port of entry.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended Alexis
Monter, 30, as he attempted to enter the country through the pedestrian lane, the department announced in a news release Sept. 2.
During the inspection process, a CBP officer found Monter had an active National Crime Information Center warrant, the release stated.
The warrant stated he was "a person of interest in the shooting of a Tucson police recruit and noted that officers should consider him armed and dangerous, with a history of violent tendencies and substance abuse," the announcement stated.
Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, 23, was shot and killed Aug. 19 inside his home. His fiancée was shot and hospitalized in stable condition with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the Sheriff's Department. Investigators described the crime as "random and dangerous" in court documents.
The Douglas Police Department was notified and arrived at the port of entry to take custody of Monter. Douglas police did not immediately respond for comment.
Pima County Sheriff's Department, which was the lead investigative agency, said in a statement that he was "considered a person of interest in the homicide investigation. He is believed to be the last registered owner of the Acura MDX that is believed to be involved in the shooting," the Sheriff's Department wrote in a statement.
The department previously released two surveillance images of the vehicle. That car was later found abandoned in a Tucson parking lot near Palo Verde Road and 33rd Street on Aug. 20.
Two men were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault in connection with the Aug. 19 shooting. Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, was taken into custody at a Tucson hotel on Aug. 22.
Alex James Barnett, 33, who authorities said was on the run for several days, was arrested on Aug. 24 after a three-hour standoff at a Tucson apartment complex.
The Sheriff's Department stated the investigation was ongoing as of Sept. 2.
