Phoenix Suns forward Miles Bridges told his teammates he was fine after injuring his right ankle in the Oct. 7 preseason road loss against the Chicago Bulls.
“I trust what he’s saying,” Suns guard Collin Gillespie said after the game. “I trust whatever he’s saying. … It’s just a little tweak.”
The Suns now have some confirmation on that.
Suns coach Jordan Ott said on Friday, Oct. 9, that x-rays on Bridges’ ankle were negative.
“Looked like it’s in pretty good shape,” Ott said after practice on Oct. 9.
Ott didn’t confirm whether Bridges will play in the Saturday, Oct. 10, preseason game against the San Antonio Spurs at Mortgage Matchup Center. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. MST, and will be carried on ESPN2.
“It’s the preseason so we’ll be smart, but
(Bridges) avoided anything serious,” Ott continued. “We’ll see how he bounced back from it (Friday), but he was able to get on the court so that’s good. It looks like it’s in a good place, but again, it’s the preseason. We’ll be smart.”
The Suns have five preseason games with Saturday’s being the third. They play the Spurs again Oct. 14 in San Antonio and wrap of preseason action at home Oct. 16 against the Utah Jazz.
Phoenix opens the regular season on the road Oct. 21 against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Bridges had a strong preseason debut Oct. 5 against the Detroit Pistons, posting eight points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal in 14 minutes.
The Suns traded Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale and an unprotected 2033 first-round pick in the offseason to the Charlotte Hornets for Bridges, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick.
Bridges played just seven minutes in Wednesday’s game. He suffered the injury in the middle of players scrambling for a loose ball early in the second quarter.
The 6-foot-7 forward grabbed it while on the floor, got up and continued to play, but checked out with 11:01 remaining in the first half.
Bridges went to the visiting locker room at the United Center and didn’t return. He finished with three points on a 3-point play, a rebound and an assist in seven minutes.
Rasheer Fleming started the second half of the game in place of Bridges.
