Arizona court leaders believe hackers copied personal information about many Arizonans in a cyberattack on the state court system, Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer said in a Sept. 25 news release from the Arizona Supreme Court.
The Administrative Office of the Courts was notifying people whose information it believed had been copied.
A notification sent early Sept. 26 and reviewed by The Arizona Republic told one recipient that court officials believed information about them and their location was among the copied data. The notice said the courts had no evidence that the recipient’s information had been shared with anyone.
Court IT staff discovered the attack and took steps to stop it, according to both the news release and the notification. Neither
specified when staff discovered the attack or whether unauthorized access had ended.
The court staff has not identified which individual courts or databases were affected or said how many people may be affected.
Timmer said she had spoken with the FBI’s top-ranking official in Arizona and pledged the courts’ cooperation with the investigation.
Court officials said they were withholding details that could harm the investigation or affected people. Further updates would be available at AZCourts.gov.
Arizona Supreme Court Communications Director Alberto Rodriguez said Sept. 26 there was no new information and the courts were still working to notify people affected.
