Arizona State named assistant coach Mike Corbett as the hockey head coach for its season-opening weekend after head coach Greg Powers was placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into the collapse of 21-year-old Matthew Mayich.
ASU added in a statement that "an interim head coach will be named soon."
It wasn't immediately clear whether Corbett was on hand at the outdoor workout during which Mayich collapsed.
Corbett, hired in 2024, is entering his third season with the Sun Devils.
Prior to ASU, Corbett has been coaching since 1997. Most recently, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Quinnipiac Bobcats, which included a national championship in 2023.
Corbett has head coaching experience and was the head coach for Alabama-Huntsville
for eight seasons from 2013-20.
ASU will begin its season at Lindenwood in Maryland Heights, Missouri, on Oct. 2-3.
