Former Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman JJ Watt continues to rise in his broadcasting career, and on Friday, Oct. 2, that career was helped by the decision at CBS to "part ways" with former No. 1 analyst Tony Romo.
In a statement, the network said it had "mutually agreed to part ways" with the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback. "We thank Tony for his contributions over the last nine years and wish him the best moving forward."
Romo, 46, was arrested in Wisconsin July 23 on suspicion driving under the influence. CBS placed him on leave, and Romo pleaded no contest last month to a civil offense.
Watt, 37, played his final two seasons of a 12-year NFL career with the Cardinals, finishing eighth in 2022 for Comeback Player of the Year.
The CBS statement
said Watt and top play-by-play voice Jim Nantz form the network's No. 1 team.
"JJ Watt will continue to partner with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on our lead NFL announce team for the rest of the season," the CBS statement said. "All other teams remain the same, including Ian Eagle, Ross Tucker and Evan Washburn."
Watt and Nantz will call the Raiders at Chiefs game on Sunday, Oct. 4.
“It’s not the circumstances you want something like this to happen under,” Watt told USA TODAY Sports in August. “But at the same time, it’s an opportunity for me to work with this incredible lead crew... .”
