The Arizona Diamondbacks sent pitching prospect Brian Curley to the St. Louis Cardinals as the player to be named later to complete the trade deadline deal that brought outfielder Lars Nootbaar to Arizona.
The club already sent two other pitching prospects — right-hander Daniel Eagen and lefty Sandro Santana — to the Cardinals in the deal.
Curley, 23, was a third-round pick out of Georgia in 2025. He posted a 5.28 ERA in 116 innings split between High-A and Double-A this season, logging 130 strikeouts and walking 34. Curley is seen by most evaluators as a likely reliever.
Nootbaar swung the bat well for the Diamondbacks, posting a .244/.353/.409 line with five homers and 17 RBIs in 42 games after the trade. He is arbitration eligible for the final
time in his career next season.
Eagen and Santana both posted strong numbers after the trade. Eagen had just a 4.15 ERA but he struck out 48 and walked seven in 34 2/3 innings in Double-A. Santana logged 17 2/3 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A, striking out 31 and walking 11.
The Diamondbacks acquired Nootbaar on Aug. 3, the day of the trade deadline.
