Editor's Note: Columbus senior athlete A’mir Sears wrote the following first-person story to explain his feelings on committing to the University of Miami. Sears announced his commitment on July 31.
The 6-foot-2, 181-pound Sears is the No. 1 athlete and No. 2 overall recruit on the USA Today Florida Network Top 100 . The five-star recruit had been the No. 2 ranked player on the USA Today 2028 national rankings before reclassifying to the 2027 class.
Sears led West Broward to its first state championship game in 2025 when he caught 42 passes for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns to go along with 61 tackles, three interceptions and 11 passes broken up.
I grew up a big Miami fan.
The majority of my family are Miami fans as well. I even played for the Hurricanes
in little league as a younger kid, imagining I was a real Cane.
Coach Cristobal has told me since I was a freshman that I was born to be a Hurricane.
At first, I thought,”Ehhh, maybe I should experience something new. Get away and go somewhere far, far away.” But then month by month in my recruiting, I realized that Miami is the place for me no matter the location.
Coach Cristobal has been very consistent about the same pitch of come here. “We will develop you into a better person and better player.” He never limits me to one side of the ball. He knows what I bring to the table as a two-way athlete and he plans to use me that way.
I was blessed because my recruiting kicked off early in my high school career. So, a lot of schools I have already visited from personal visits to team or 7v7 visits.
The last few months have been absolute chaos. It’s been wild since coaches were actually able to recruit me. The first day of contact my phone literally stopped working and froze up.
As far reclassifying, it came up a lot on visits and family convos, but we really never started evaluating it until July. That’s when we really felt that I was mature enough and ready for the next step.
I think the fact of being able to get on campus early, get bigger, faster and develop under the best program in America is what really took the cake. I’ve seen the results of what coach Cristobal and the staff have done in the past two years, and I’m ready now to be a part of that process. People shout money all the time. That’s a part of the process but it is never the No. 1 reason in reclassification.
I decided to commit to Miami literally on July 28, the day I announced my reclassification. That’s when the phones started ringing off the hook again. My family and I probably spoke with 20 schools that day.
Seeing Miami in the national championship game really showed me that everything coach preached about was coming to fruition. Growing up, I heard about the glory days but never seen it.
Now I have.
I am fully committed to the University of Miami. But I know for a fact colleges won’t stop until signing day.
