A practical way to help seniors remain
in their homes is to strengthen Florida’s homestead tax relief. Homeowners who have lived in the state for at least 10 years before turning 65 should receive an increased homestead exemption once they retire. At the same time, teachers — who are essential to our communities yet often underpaid — should receive the same benefit. Doing so would provide a meaningful boost to their take-home income and help retain experienced educators. Limiting this expanded benefit to these groups would target relief where it is most needed while keeping the policy fair and focused.

A columnist comes to her senses
There may be hope for our country after all. Nicole Russell, one the most blindly loyal Trump supporters, has finally had enough. In her Aug. 19 op-ed, she goes to great lengths describing how Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress have lost their fiscal minds with out-of-control spending on vanity projects while showing little concern for affordability or budget deficits. She claims she had good reasons for voting for the president three times, without elaborating, and never mentions his numerous other disqualifying, illegal, unconstitutional and immoral actions. But, hey, better late than never.
Maybe many of the MAGA faithful were fine with all the chaos and corruption as long as it didn’t affect them personally but I guess 5-dollar-a-gallon gas, losing health care, a disastrous war of choice in Iran and unaffordable groceries is finally waking people up. If Ms. Russell can finally admit to what was obvious to the rest of us for the past 10 years, that Trump is not fit for any government office, maybe many more of the cult followers will see the light. They will have their chance in November to reject the failed regime by electing representatives who are actually qualified, will respect their oath of office and the rule of law and hold those that don’t or haven’t, accountable. Ms. Russell doesn’t actually say it, but removing all the incompetent, self-serving officials is the only way we will fix the colossal mess we are in.

T'is the season. Why not a section?
Accent, Business, Local, Opinion, Sports ― they all have their sections in The Palm Beach Post. Why not have a "Politics" section? Easier to keep [the contents] or discard them. Readers' choice.

Voting fraud is a real thing
The media likes to say that there is very little evidence of voter fraud, but just last month New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill admitted that some 6,000 non-citizens were (mistakenly) registered to vote in our elections, and 400 of them did. How is this not big evidence of election fraud? And why should we take the governor's word for it that only 400 non-citizens illegally voted in her state? I think we need a very thorough and truly independent investigation of this matter, with anyone who voted illegally prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law. And the governor shouldn't be putting up any roadblocks to such a probe. This is yet another reason why we need to pass the SAVE Act, which would require people prove their citizenship before registering to vote.
