A Palm Beach County school bus with 10 students aboard turned into the path of a pickup early Thursday on Lantana Road in suburban Lake Worth Beach, leading to a crash that injured four people, a Sheriff's Office report said.
The report, issued late Friday, Aug. 21, said the bus turned left from westbound Lantana onto Pine Needle Way, between Jog Road and Florida's Turnpike, just after 6:45 a.m., "violating" the right of way of a 2005 Ford F-150 that was eastbound on Lantana.
The driver's side door of the pickup struck the front of the bus, causing heavy damage to the truck. The report did not detail what led to the wreck.
The crash sent the four occupants of the truck to a trauma center for care, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reported. All were
trapped inside the truck, and rescue crews needed to use the "jaws of life" to pull them out.
The report identified the driver of the truck as Denis F. Quib-Cu, 20, of suburban Lake Worth Beach. He and an unnamed passenger sustained serious injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.
Two other unnamed people in the truck sustained minor injuries, as did the driver of the bus, Michael Williams, 36, of West Palm Beach.
The Sheriff's Office report did not indicate that any charges are pending in the crash or how fast either vehicle was traveling at the moment of impact.
The bus was carrying the students to Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School in suburban Lake Worth Beach. In a statement to parents, Principal Oscar Otero said all 10 students were safe and that a school nurse met them after they were driven to school from the crash scene.
