Sept. 11, 2026,
marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. On that tragic day, 19 members of al-Qaida hijacked four planes, two of which were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Another was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, located just outside the nation’s capital. The fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the hijackers.Remembering 9/11 — the nationwide promise to "never forget" — is about more than just remembering the tragedy that unfolded on city blocks and television screens throughout the country. It changed the world.
That day foreign enemies inspired new alliances on the home front. Political
divisions and petty quarrels went out the window. Friends, family members and total strangers came together, putting aside their differences and finding strength in their newfound sense of community.
And on that day, newspapers across the country were prompted to print special sections or "extras." Here's a look back at those 9/11 front pages.
