A long-standing Wellington gym is getting a makeover.
LA Fitness, on the perimeter of the Mall at Wellington Green, is scheduled to close on Sept. 1 after more than two decades in the village. Its parent company, Fitness International LLC, plans to replace it with a luxury fitness club.
A notice posted on the front door of the 35,000-square-foot building announced the closure and sparked reactions on social media from many Wellington residents who said they were longtime members.
An employee who answered the phone at the Wellington location confirmed the closure date and said the company has not publicly announced a reason for the shutdown.
Current members will gain access to all other LA Fitness locations nationwide starting Sept. 1, according
to the notice. The nearest LA Fitness is about 5 miles away in Lake Worth Beach.
Tim Stillings, Wellington's planning director, confirmed that Fitness International plans to reopen the facility as a Club Studio.
The move is part of a broader effort by Fitness International to shift some of its low-cost traditional LA Fitness locations toward high-end wellness clubs offering specialized classes and premium amenities.
The Club Studio concept features boutique-style fitness spaces offering classes in high-intesity interval training, cycling, boxing, Pilates, yoga and trampoline-based workouts. The clubs also include recovery areas with spa-like amenities such as cryotherapy, massages and physical therapy.
The Wellington location is among several South Florida LA Fitness gyms that have either closed or announced plans to close as part of the transition. Other affected locations include ones near boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Stuart and Fort Lauderdale.
