Palm Beach County's youngest city is getting a Walmart superstore.
Walmart bought a 24-acre parcel in Westlake from developer Minto Communities in a deal that closed on Friday, July 31, Minto announced. Minto did not say how much Walmart paid for the land, and a deed was not yet available from the Palm Beach County Clerk and Comptroller's office.
Walmart plans to build a 188,779-square-foot "superstore" at Seminole Pratt Whitney Road and Town Center Parkway North, the city's growing retail corridor, Minto said in a press release. The location will feature a grocery store, pharmacy, garden center, automotive center and vision center.
"Walmart gives Westlake homeowners another place to shop for everyday essentials, right in their own backyard," said
John Carter, Senior Vice President of Minto Communities. "Bringing in major brands like Walmart and Lowe's is a clear vote of confidence in our community’s growth and long-term value."
The Walmart superstore will rise next to a future Lowe's Home Improvement store on Seminole Pratt Whitney Road that will serve as the chain's regional headquarters. Minto said the retail plaza will also feature a gas station and convenience store, which will be in a separate area of the shopping plaza.
Right now, the closest Walmart is near Royal Palm Beach, about 12 miles and a 20- to 25-minute drive away.
Minto said it has now sold about half of the 2.2 million square feet approved for commercial development in Westlake.
"As Westlake reaches critical mass, the market is taking notice,” Carter said. “We want to be selective as to what types of businesses come in the city, focusing on those that add real value for our residents.”
