A Loxahatchee Groves man died Friday, Sept. 11, two days after he hit a stop sign with his dirt bike along Okeechobee Boulevard west of State Road 7, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.
Luis Angel Cardenas Meraz struck the sign on Wednesday, Sept., 9, and he spent the final hours of his life at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, according to a crash report. Doctors declared him dead at midnight on Sept. 11.
The crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. as Cardenas Meraz drove a 2024 Zhejiang dirt bike eastbound along Okeechobee's southern sidewalk and then its dirt shoulder near B Road, the Sheriff's Office said.
The force of the crash threw Cardenas Meraz, 44, from the bike and onto the pavement, and he was not conscious while Palm
Beach County Fire Rescue paramedics treated him at the scene.
Cardenas Meraz was not wearing safety equipment while he road the bike, according to the crash report.
There was no evidence that either drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, the Sheriff's Office said. Its report did not specify how fast the bike was traveling at the time of the wreck.
