It's almost time for daylight saving time − and, good news, "daylight saving time deals."
Despite efforts to permanently get rid of daylight saving time in Florida and beyond, it'll soon "end" in 2026. But grocery stores, restaurants and big-box retailers typically cash in on the daylight savings action: By offering consumers a break.
The age-old practice started up in March, when we set our clocks forward one hour − unless you live in a state or area that does not observe daylight saving time − and it ends just after Halloween.
Like clockwork (sorry not sorry).
Daylight savings deal: Walmart products
For years, lawmakers tried to permanently end daylight saving time in Florida via the Sunshine Protection Act, with bills introduced in 2018, 2019,
2021, 2023 and 2025. However, the bills were never passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, and they have never been signed into law.
In July 2026, the House of Representatives voted "yes" on the Sunshine Protection Act, which would leave it up to each state to decide whether to make daylight saving time permanent. However, there is no vote scheduled on it, and Senators won't have much time to take action, as lawmakers are scheduled to leave the Capitol on Oct. 5, 2026, for a break and will not return until after the time change, on Nov. 9.
Below is information about daylight saving time, commonly referred to as "daylight savings," reasons why we still "fall back" or "spring forward" and what we know about daylight saving time deals.
What is daylight saving time?
According to timeanddate.com, "daylight saving time is the practice of setting the clocks one hour ahead of standard time to make use of more sunlight in the spring, summer and fall evenings. Daylight saving time (DST) is used to save energy and make better use of daylight. It was first used in 1908 in Thunder Bay, Canada."
Daylight saving time became a national standard in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act, which was established as a way to continue to conserve energy. The thinking was, if it's light out longer, that's less time you'll need to use lights in your home.
When is daylight saving time 2026? When is fall back 2026? When is spring forward 2027?
Daylight saving time "ends" at 2 a.m. ET Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026 (Halloween weekend!), for "fall back." DST starts (again) at 2 a.m. ET Sunday, March 14, 2027, for "spring forward." Daylight saving time then "ends" at 2 a.m. ET Sunday, Nov. 7, 2027, for "fall back."
Time change is coming up. What does 'fall back, spring forward' mean?
According to dictionary.com, daylight saving, commonly referred to as daylight savings, "is begun in the spring by setting clocks one hour ahead. They are then set one hour back in the fall. ... People often use the simple mnemonic spring forward, fall back to remember to set clocks forward one hour (e.g., from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.) in the spring and backward one hour (e.g., from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m.) in the fall."
Daylight saving time deals for stores, online for fall back 2026, so far
Weeks before daylight saving time starts and ends, "daylight savings deals" is a hot search online and a hit with restaurants, grocery stores, home improvement stores and even food-delivery services.
In the past, restaurants such as Dunkin Donuts and Burger King have held "daylight savings deals," along with grocery stores like Kroger and King Sooper's. In spring 2026, DoorDash announced its "daylight savings menu near me" promotion, in which customers could log in and peruse which restaurants that partner with the delivery service have specials related to daylight saving time.
As the clock starts ticking closer to daylight saving time (pun intended), check back with the USA TODAY Network, home to newspapers and online news sites across the country, for "daylight savings deals."
As of Friday, Sept. 18, these are the stores that have a "daylight savings deals" section on their sites.
- Walmart has its "daylight saving deals" promotion, in which customers can "fall back with clocks and more from $6" and up. Items that are part of the "daylight saving deals" promotion include clocks, lamps, throw pillows and blankets, rugs, doormats, curtains, mirrors, lighting, candles and wax melts, coffeemakers, and lots of home decor. "Save on items with 4 stars and above," which are based on customer ratings and number of reviews, are included with the promotion.
- Home Depot "daylight savings deals" include savings on clocks, pillows, home decor and a Memory Foam mattress.
