Coco Gauff has been on a roll heading into the U.S. Open. Could a second championship in Flushing Meadows be on the way for the South Florida native?
Delray Beach's No. 1 daughter slipped up in the third round of her French Open title defense, then lost her opening match at her next tournament in Berlin. That's when the 22-year-old star turned her game to a new level, reaching her first semifinal on her worst surface, the grass courts of Wimbledon. After a semifinal appearance in Toronto, Gauff dropped the first set at the Cincinnati Open, then won the rest all the way through beating Jessica Pegula in the final.
The fourth-seeded Gauff has battled consistency in her serving throughout her career, but when she's on, it's clear why she's seen as the
successor to Venus and Serena Williams as the next great American tennis star from the Sunshine State. She hasn't made it to the quarterfinals at the site of her first grand gram title since winning it in 2023, falling last year to a resurgent Naomi Osaka in the fourth round. The two friends could meet again in the semifinal this year.
