The frosting-heavy specialty cookie craze is crumbling and Palm Beach County is feeling the effects.
Crumbl Cookies is closing underperforming stores amid declining sales and dwindling demand for their pricey, sugary desserts. It closed its Jupiter store in 2025, but Crumbl still has five shops in Palm Beach County: in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach, according to its website. More Crumbl locations have recently closed in Florida.
The cookie and dessert franchise went viral for its unique, colorful, flavorful, Instagram and TikTok-friendly creations, expanding to more than 1,100 locations in five years. Last year, the Utah-based chain said it planned to keep going.
“We have no plans for growth to stop and will
be opening many more stores in both the United States and Canada in 2026,” Rhonda Bromley, Crumbl’s VP of public relations, told Fast Company in 2025. But the chain was already closing some underperforming stores, and an unflattering Bloomberg Businessweek story was enough to trigger social media rumors of chocolate chip doom.
Crumbl co-founder Sawyer Hemsley even posted to TikTok to explain that they weren't going anywhere. "We're excited for what's ahead, and honestly, we're just getting started," he said.
However, Hemsley and co-founder Jason McGowan stepped down from their roles in May, and Entrepreneur reported that August sales were 70% lower than the previous two years, with 57 store closures this year and company layoffs.
Experts say luxury cookies are a faddish splurge more than a regular thing, and inflation is causing all Americans to re-evaluate whether they want to spend $5 on a single specialty cookie, no matter how cool it is. The rise in diet GLP-1 medications hasn't helped, either.
Crumbl wasn't alone. Chip City Cookies closed their last location on Oct. 9, including the Delray Beach location at 302 E. Atlantic Ave
"It's not surprising at all that the cookie bubble is bursting. We see this over and over again: when a specific restaurant concept gets hot, a bunch of locations and brands start to flood the market," said Mike Kostyo, the vice president of food and beverage consultancy Menu Matters and an expert in the food industry trends field for over a decade. "The same thing happened with pizza fast casuals, poke chains, dirty soda brands, cupcake bakeries, and frozen yogurt operators."
