Florida's Republican dominance all but assuredSen. Ashley Moody a cakewalk to win her first election after Gov. Ron DeSantis last year appointed her to the seat. Early on, no poll and no political pundit saw any chance of Democrats flipping a Senate seat in Florida. But, no one expected Democrat Angie Nixon to make this an interesting contest.
Moody may have the advantage, but Nixon has shown to be the better candidate in explaining her priorities to a much wider audience than her reticent opponent who has relied on friendly venues, scripted remarks and fabricated attack ads that give voters almost no information on where she stands on important issues. At times, she seemed to be hiding from her constituents. In this contest, the Post Editorial

A small business owner in Jacksonville and a largely unknown backbencher in the Florida House, Nixon has shown an authenticity in advocating her progressive views, whether it's making child care and housing more affordable, developing pragmatic immigration policies, raising the federal minimum wage or ending the war in Iran.
For the record, Nixon has not called for "defunding the police," "emptying prisons," "opening the border" or "rewriting the constitution." Such is the tone and tenor of fear that predominates the 2026 campaign ads.

Her calls to "tax billionaires," abolish ICE, make it easier to form unions, or her support for a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis in Gaza have their share of critics, which has prompted outlandish political attacks that Nixon's views are too "radical" and "socialist" to be a senator. That hasn't deterred Nixon. She's shown no fear of speaking her mind or considering opposing points of views, a plus for anyone in the world's greatest deliberative body.

Moody, a former judge and two-term attorney general, has the advantage of running in a state where registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats. She's also raised more than $20 million for her Senate campaign, according to recent campaign finance reports. Moody has been a reliable Republican vote in the Senate, and that may be enough for her and her supporters. No need for the accountability that comes with explaining her Senate record or priorities in a new term. No concern about lingering controversies, like the Hope Foundation scandal, that may dog her campaign. Nixon represents a change we believe will benefit Florida, which is why the Post urges voters to elect her.
