Gasoline prices are surging again this week in Palm Beach County.
The average price for regular gas in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area on Monday, Sept. 21, is about $4.44 per gallon, which is about 16 cents higher than one week ago and about 36 cents higher than one month ago, according to AAA.
A scroll through the GasBuddy website found a station in Delray Beach as high as $5.09 per gallon.
A year ago, regular gas in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area cost about $3.26 per gallon. Today’s average price is a more than $1 jump from that.
The spike in diesel prices has been even sharper. Florida's average diesel price is about $6.28 per gallon, nearly $3 higher than one year ago, according to the AAA. The average price for diesel in the West Palm
Beach-Boca Raton area is about $6.38, also nearly $3 higher than one year ago.
Gas prices are rising nationwide because crude oil prices are high amid volatility in the Middle East, according to AAA. The reason for the rapid increase is tied to the military conflict involving Iran.
The war has has heavily restricted ship and oil-tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
