The National Weather Service announced Sept. 14 that it is officially changing Lake Ontario's name to Lake America.
According to a public information statement, the renaming follows the executive order "Honoring the American History of the Great Lakes," that was signed Aug. 27 by President Donald Trump.
"Work is underway to update naming conventions as quickly as possible on online maps, weather products, websites and other materials across the NWS," the announcement says. "Caution will be exercised to avoid disruptions to operations."
Trump signed the executive order during an escalation of a trade war with Canada.
The National Weather Service has experience renaming bodies of water following presidential edicts.
In 2025, Gulf of America replaced
Gulf of Mexico on all of its maps and related forecast products after Trump signed an executive order making the change to the estuarine-fed water body on his first day back in office.
