Carol City High School's football program has to forfeit its season opening win against Mainland because of an ineligible player.

The Florida High School Athletic Association confirmed the forfeit to the USA TODAY Florida Network on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Miami Carol City self-reported the infractions to the FHSAA.

Carol City is ranked No. 5 on the USA TODAY Florida Network Super 25

and No. 1 on the Florida Super 10 Class 2A poll.

The Chiefs (1-2) beat Mainland, 38-3, on the field on Aug. 21.

"It doesn't change the whipping they put on us," Mainland coach Jerrime Bell said. "I feel bad for the kids involved. They're 16- to 17-year-old kids making decisions they think are best. But it's the adults involved not the kids. Let the kids play. That's not me calling

for a ban for their coach. I'm not and I think he's doing a really good job with that program. it just really sucks for the kids to lose if you're ineligible for a decision he thought he was making for his future."
