U.S. financial markets paused for Labor Day today, leaving investors unable to trade stocks, bonds, or over-the-counter securities until markets resume after the holiday.
The holiday honors the U.S. labor movement and workers across the country. Federal, state, and local government offices will be closed, along with banks and post offices.
If you're hoping to make domestic stock trades, you'll have to wait until markets reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

U.S. stock markets close for Labor Day
The New York Stock Exchange is closed today, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.
Regular trading on the NYSE resumes from 9:30 a.m. ET to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE National, and NYSE Texas late trading sessions
are also closed.
Nasdaq is closed for Labor Day as well. Trading will resume during normal market hours after the holiday.
US Bond and over-the-counter markets also shut down
The U.S. bond market is closed Monday, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. It will reopen on Tuesday.
Over-the-counter trading, where securities are traded directly rather than through an exchange, is also closed today.
Remaining U.S. stock market holiday schedule
Markets will observe the following closures and early closings during the remainder of the year:
- Monday, Sept. 7: Markets closed for Labor Day
- Thursday, Nov. 26: Markets closed for Thanksgiving
- Friday, Nov. 27: Markets close at 1 p.m. ET the Friday after Thanksgiving
- Thursday, Dec. 24: Markets close at 1 p.m. for Christmas Eve
- Friday, Dec. 25: Markets closed for Christmas Day
International exchanges remain open
However, if you trade on international markets, they're still open. The London Stock Exchange, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange are all open for normal trading hours.
EuroNext trading is open, but there will be no after-hours trading in Milan on Monday and Tuesday.
