A Brightline trainstruck and killed a man as he tried to cross railroad tracks near downtown Lake Worth Beach early Sunday, authorities said.
A spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the man, moving west along Lake Avenue and North G Street, walked into the train's path "for reasons unknown" shortly after midnight on Aug. 2. Paramedics pronounced him dead within 10 minutes of the collision.
Deputies did not immediately identify the man, whose death is the fourth involving a South Florida passenger rail train in just over a month. Few barriers separate people and cars from the street-level tracks, which intersect with major roads across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
On July 24, 38-year-old bicyclist Ulisses Aponte
was struck and killed as he crossed in front of a Tri-Rail train in Lake Worth Beach. One month before that, 56-year-old Catalina Gabriel Lopez and 43-year-old Eduardo Otoniel Gabriel Lopez died after driving into the side of a passing Brightline train in West Palm Beach.
Not every crash has ended in fatality. In August 2025, a Brightline engineer spotted a car on the tracks in downtown West Palm Beach and slowed down enough to strike the car without injuring the driver.
