Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney briefly left the Hurricanes' game Saturday, Oct. 3 with a shoulder injury.
In the third quarter against Clemson, Toney dove for a pass from Darian Mensah and brought it in for a first down. After the play, he jogged off the field favoring his left shoulder. The sophomore had fallen with all his weight on that arm.
Toney broke Miami receiving records as a freshman last season with a nation-leading 109 catches for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns, adding another score rushing and two passing. In 2026, the 19-year-old has been the majority of the Canes' offense behind quarterback Darian Mensah, with 34 catches for 564 yards and six touchdowns, all among the highest in FBS.
After three plays and a timeout, Toney was back
on the field for a fourth-down play, making the catch between two defenders for a first down. Miami would score a touchdown to go up 24-6.
Toney also experienced what coach Mario Cristobal called "upper-body discomfort" during the game Sept. 18 at Wake Forest. He came out for stages in the game after reaching up and making an athletic catch in the second half of that game.
Earlier in the Clemson game, guard Max Buchanan and tackle Matthew McCoy also went down with injuries. Lead edge rusher Marquise Lightfoot also went to the locker room with an injury in the second quarter and had not returned when Toney got hurt.
