As Cyclospora casescontinue to rise across Florida, a microscopic parasite linked to contaminated fresh produce is prompting safety precautions at Palm Beach County grocery stores.
Since May 1, ten cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in Palm Beach County, according to the Florida Department of Health. The stomach bug, which causes watery diarrhea, nausea, and severe cramping, has been tied to a voluntary recall of Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce products. Walmart subsequently pulled select Marketside-brand bagged iceberg lettuce from its Florida shelves as a precaution.
Statewide, 254 cases have been reported since May, with Miami-Dade County leading the state at 40 cases. Health officials note that Cyclospora outbreaks spike during warmer
months when fresh produce consumption peaks. While past U.S. outbreaks have been linked to raspberries, basil and cilantro, bagged leafy greens remain a primary concern for consumers this summer.
