The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a man whose body was found Tuesday near a construction site on Interstate 95 in West Palm Beach.
An FHP spokesperson did not identify the man on Tuesday. Investigators turned the body over to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office for further examination.
A surveying and clean-up crew discovered the remains at about 7:15 a.m. on Sept.15 on the northbound exit ramp to 45th Street, the agency said in a prepared statement. While working, crew members noticed a strong odor and later located the body of a man in an advanced state of decomposition.
A forensic investigator from the Medical Examiner's Office arrived to process the scene with the detectives. Authorities found no immediate
signs of foul play, although the autopsy will determine the cause of death.
Investigators didn't find the identification with the man's body, but they located a makeshift shelter nearby containing clothing and personal items.
The condition of the man's remains prevented investigators from identifying the man through visual examination, FHP said. DNA and dental records will be primary methods for establishing his identity.
Detectives are coordinating with West Palm Beach Police Department to review local records of people experiencing homelessness in the area in an effort to identify the man.
