First responders aren't shielded from Amendment 3

I read State Rep. Gossett-Seidman's Sept.

27 column regarding the legislature’s deliberations on Amendment 3. First, she is incorrect in stating that the legislature took steps to protect taxes that fund law enforcement and public safety. There is no such language in the amendment. The amendment specifies what cities and counties may spend tax revenue on, but does not specify any set level of spending. That’s why the Florida sherriffs, police officers and firefighters have officially opposed it. Second, in this case it’s almost worse that the legislature took a lot of time to deliberate on this, rather than rushing, and still failed to consider the consequences of its disastrous action.

Christians too worry about Christian Naitonalism

Recently, a letter to the editor expressed fear among the Jewish community regarding "Christian Nationalism" and mentions that embedded in our supposedly secular government's literature is the declaration of Jesus Christ's supremacy over other religious beliefs. Many real Christians are also concerned about this government's counterfeit Christian ideals. This administration is currently working to undermine the real teachings of Christ in many ways. The Felon in Chief and his accomplices in Congress are disguising white supremacy and Christian Nationalism as a patriotic movement; it isn't. A closer inspection of this administration's policies will reveal these policies more closely resemble counterfeit Christian fascists' values than anything godly. Do not be deceived. Learn how Christ himself warns us about these counterfeit Christians coming in His name.

Fear is on the ballot

Sixteen candidates refused to answer questions in the nonpartisan League of Women Voters voting guide on how they stand on issues or what they hope to do if elected. Fifteen of them are from the same political party and I have to wonder why. Does that party prefer to bombard us with accusatory ads about their opponents rather than quietly explain what THEY will do or think? I use the guide when filling out my mail-in ballot and those silent candidates have removed themselves from consideration for my vote.

Hope Fund debacle shouldn't be ignored

How much has Gov. DeSantis spent of taxpayer money to charge 20 possible illegal voters out of 11 million voters in the Florida 2024 election? Why so close to the November election, to put fear into minorities and suppress the vote of Democrats? It is called “rigging.” It is costly to democracy and to taxpayers. A better investment of taxpayer funds would be the $10 million that went to the Hope Fund instead of health care for needy children, as was intended. The Hope Fund used and abused the citizens’ initiatives to protect abortion rights and fight for marijuana legalization by spreading untruths in advertising campaigns, more “rigging.” Stealing from ill children, minorities, voters, and citizens’ voices was costly to all Floridians. They must be held accountable.
