Longtime lawyer Darryl Kogan pleaded guilty Thursday to trying to view child pornography, a charge which strips him of his law license and cements his status as a registered sex offender.
Kogan, 68, appeared unshackled in a Miami courtroom wearing a suit and tie. He made no public remarks beyond affirming his decision to plead guilty and, after exchanging hugs with supporters in the courtroom gallery, was taken into federal custody. His team of attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment afterward.
Prosecutors filed a one-page charging document in October accusing Kogan of trying to view child pornography in February from a device in Broward County. They offered no additional details Thursday about what prompted the federal
probe but credited Kogan with cooperating with investigators and quickly accepting responsibility.
Kogan, who listed his Boca Raton home for sale for $4 million in August, co-founded the South Florida law firm Kogan & DiSalvo in 1994. He retired this year, paving the way for the firm's rebrand as Baker & DiSalvo. Neither of its namesakes, Todd Baker and Ted DiSalvo, returned a request for comment.
U.S. District Judge Melissa Damian accepted Kogan's plea and adjourned the hearing. The charge, a felony, carries a penalty between five and 20 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000. She will decide his sentence on Jan. 5.
