WELLINGTON — District 13-6A rivals Santaluces and Wellington played a grand total of seven minutes before a lightning delay halted play on Oct. 16, and the game was subsequently postponed.
After an initial weather delay pushed the kickoff back to 7:37 p.m., Wellington took the opening kickoff and moved quickly into Santaluces territory, aided by Jay'Lan Tyler's 20-yard run and a personal foul penalty against the Chiefs.
From the 32-yard line, Tarrens Catul caught a short pass over the middle but fumbled, and Santaluces safety Elijah Vilna returned it to the 50-yard line. At that point, officials signaled another stoppage at 7:44 p.m.
The teams returned to their locker rooms and waited more than an hour before the game was called at around 9. The Chiefs
(4-3, 3-2 in district) and Wolverines (5-2, 2-2) will make it up on Monday, Oct. 26.
While Oct. 15 may have been the final official day of South Florida's "rainy season," inclement weather has taken a toll on the Week 9 high school football slate in Palm Beach County.
As of 9:45 p.m., more than a half dozen games had experienced lightning delays or were postponed altogether. Those games include Palm Beach Central at Jupiter, Melbourne Central Catholic at Pahokee and Coral Glades at Boca Raton.
