American Airlines is dropping five routes, including two in Florida, in 2027 as the carrier scales back some of its expansion plans for next summer.
The airline is ending routes between Miami and Tulum, Mexico, and Miami and Montreal in January 2027, along with a route between Phoenix and Provo, Utah, Airline Geeks reported. A route between Chicago, Illinois, and Lincoln, Nebraska, will end in April. A seasonal flight between Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, and Albany, New York, will not resume next year.
“As part of targeted actions to strengthen the airline, American will moderate its planned growth next summer,” an American spokesperson said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY NETWORK - Florida. “We will continue to evaluate our network, while remaining
focused on investing in our product, enhancing reliability and serving the destinationsour customers value most.”

The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline recently resumed flights between Florida and Caracas, Venezuela, after a pair of earthquakes devastated the area on June 24, killing thousands and displacing many more, just two months after American became the first U.S. airline to return to the country in six years.
Other large carriers are adding more Florida flights. Delta Air Linesrecently added a new nonstop flight between Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) near Fort Myers and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, and Southwest Airlines has announced plans to bump up Orlando service in summer 2027, and add a Sarasota-Austin route.
It's the discount airlines that are fueling Florida's air travel expansion, with low-cost carriers growing aggressively across the state.
JetBlue goes all in on Florida
With its biggest ultra-low-cost competitor, Spirit Airlines, having abruptly shuttered in May, JetBlue has significantly expanded its presence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to fill the gap, and more.
To support its stated goal of becoming South Florida's dominant airline, the carrier has even cut routes and reduced operations at other airports to focus its resources on FLL.
JetBlue also connected Florida closer to Colombia, launching a new daily, nonstop route between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ) in Barranquilla. Flights to Cali (CLO) are planned to launch later this month.
Allegiant adding Florida airports
Allegiant Air is adding more Florida flights to an already expanded network. One-way flights from Orlando International Airport (MCO) or Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) start in February 2027.
Allegiant is also adding more flights to Flint Bishop International Airport (FNT) on existing routes at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) this winter.
Allegiant previously announced nearly 30 new and returning seasonal flights coming to Florida airports in the second half of 2026, and nine new nonstop routes starting February 2027.
Breeze launching new Florida flights
Breeze Airways added several new flights in the last week, all out of Vero Beach, including Trenton, New Jersey (started Sept. 30), Baltimore, Maryland, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (started Oct. 1), Atlantic City, New Jersey and Provo, Utah (started Oct. 2), and Burlington, Vermont (started Oct. 4).
Breeze added a Trenton-Fort Lauderdale route last week, and a nonstop Trenton-Fort Myers route is coming Jan. 8, 2027.
The new flights are part of nearly two dozen new and returning Florida routes Breeze announced earlier this year. In May, the Utah-based carrier also announced a major international expansion with seven new routes, including flights between Tampa and Cancun, Mexico, and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Frontier beefing up Fort Lauderdale presence
Frontier Airlines is adding new routes connecting Fort Lauderdale to Denver, and Orlando and Kansas City, Missouri, starting in November.
Other new routes will run between Detroit and Los Angeles; Houston, Texas, and San Juan, Puerto Rico; Orlando and Bogotá, Cartagena; and Medellín in Colombia.
