Air Flight 7598, an Amazon cargo plane, overran the runway during landing at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Sept. 6, according to the Federal Aviation Administration
The Amazon Air Boeing 767-300 jet, operated by airline 21 Air, departed San Juan, Puerto Rico, earlier in the day.
The FAA, which is investigating the crash, issued a ground stop at the Miami airport until at least 4:30 p.m.
A video of the crash obtained by NBC News Miami shows a black cloud of smoke billowing from the aircraft.
In a statement to USA TODAY, the Miami International Airport confirmed that the plane overran the "diagonal runway and is disabled at the northwest end of the airport." All runways and taxiways are closed and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue
has responded.
The plane struck multiple vehicles near the airport, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a post on Facebook.
"Over 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units are on scene of an incident involving a plane that overran a runway and struck multiple vehicles near Miami International Airport. Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing. Firefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients."
Officials told the New York Times there were "multiple outpatients," but their injuries were not known.
