Blanche unfit for attorney general
Books have been written about the countless ways [President] Trump has damaged our country. But the damage done by his nominees for his cabinet posts, especially most recently Todd Blanche for attorney general, will leave long lasting scars on our national psyche and take years to repair. Most of us strive to teach our children and grandchildren the universal concepts of right and wrong, of respect, civility, service, and regard for rule of law. Trump, with the complicity of Congress, especially the GOP Senate, which confirmed what are nothing more than his henchmen, has taken a sledgehammer to these time-honored concepts which are crucial if a democratic society is to function.
It appears the Senate is about to let Trump take another swing at our
democratic foundations with the possible confirmation of Blanche, who as acting attorney general and Trump’s former personal attorney, has turned the Justice Department into a Trump retribution posse, potential gold mine, and Epstein Files black hole. Hundreds of former Justice Department attorneys, judges, and bar associations have publicly warned that Blanche is not fit for the job. Let’s hope enough senators heed all these warnings and vote "no." Our children and grandchildren deserve better.

HOA column spot on
Re the Aug. 5 Larry E. Schner article on HOAs: I have been and still am a director and officer of an HOA for over 20 years. Yes, dues monthly or quarterly, go up every year. This is due to the rising costs. The latest thing we are hit with this year is a fuel surcharge from everyone that uses their equipment to service us. Schner is also correct about transparency. In my over-55 HOA, no matter what information is put to the residents either in a board meeting or various email blasts to the entire community it/we are always challenged. When asked where you got your information, the answer is usually, "I know the rules." Florida rules say, our documents say, the other boards say ―residents need to know that before anything is done or said the actual facts are checked and sometimes the HOA attorney is consulted before decisions are made. We are so over our Legal Fee amount in this year's budget due to residents complaining about most things our board is doing. Our volunteer board always acts in the best interests of our entire community. I am also sure every over-55 HOA has their share of residents that are unhappy with everything.

No 'America First' for natural disasters
President Donald Trump has barely uttered a word about the floods, fires and tornadoes that have ravaged the country. He has made no effort to visit the neighborhoods that have been wiped off the map, leaving thousands homeless. These are both blue and red states. Yet, when floods ravaged North Carolina during the Biden administration, Trump said it had abandoned the state. During his first term, he blamed California’s lack of “cleaning” its forests for their fires. Calling climate change a "hoax," he has drastically cut funding for such preventative action. How does this guy claim to be the defender of “America First?”
