MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins fell to the Atlanta Falcons to end preseason at 0-3.
This season will be measured by more than wins and losses.
More important, with expectations of a regular season with perhaps three-to-five wins, is that there is a solid foundation and culture built and there is player development and growth.
There are going to be some very difficult moments for coach Jeff Hafley
and his team.That said, here is an Overreaction Saturday following Miami's 17-12 loss.
Let's overreact … or not?
The Dolphins will have a hard time winning five games
Overreaction? No. Miami has one of the worst, perhaps the worst, rosters in the NFL. Don't blame current general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. He was handed a mess. Miami set an intentional blowtorch to thing and this is the resulting wildfire.
The Dolphins have a backup quarterback crisis
Overreaction? No. Quinn Ewers has not taken a step forward. Cam Miller or Mark Gronowski seem possible practice squad candidates. Miami should look to add any intriguing young quarterback with pedigree who is cut.
De'Von Achane is the Dolphins' only elite player
Overreaction? No. De'Von Achane was Miami's only Pro Bowler last season for a reason. Jordyn Brooks and Aaron Brewer are very good players. Zach Sieler is a good player. But he's also 30. The Dolphins hope Malik Willis will become a very good player. Miami has high hopes for rookies Kadyn Proctor, Chris Johnson, Jacob Rodriguez and Chris Bell. But they are rookes. This is a talent-starved roster.
The Dolphins' pass rush may be non-existent
Overreaction? No. We can't say for sure if Chop Robinsonwill reach his potential. But Miami has nothing else from a watch-out-for-that-guy perspective. Consider a year ago it was Chop, Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Matthew Judon in the edge rusher room. Matthew Judon isn't walking through that door. We kid. We kid.
Any injury to a starter may be catastrophic
Overreaction? No. Literally any injury. Pick a player. Pick a position. Left tackle? center? Linebacker? Cornerback? Man, it doesn't matter. Miami is screwed if almost anyone gets hurt. That's when there is the biggest fear this season can completely unravel. For the first time in forever (yes, Elsa) the Dolphins need some injury luck.
