Today — Aug. 12 — is the day a total solar eclipse will send the sun hiding behind the moon.
Well, that's how it will appear for a few places on Earth.
Unfortunately, Florida and most of the United States aren't among the few, but USA TODAY and NASA will livestream the event so you won't have to try to remember where you put your eclipse glasses after theGreat American Eclipse of 2024.

On this same date but in 2045, another total solar eclipse will be visible over almost all of Florida, according to NationalEclipse.com.
A partial solar eclipse will be visible across northern North America, according to NASA.

Total solar eclipse 2026 happening today, Aug. 12. Where is path of totality?
A total solar eclipse will occur today, Aug. 12, 2026.
The eclipse will begin at 11:34 a.m. ET, with the peak happening at 1:45 p.m. ET, and ending at 3:57 p.m. ET, according to AccuWeather.
According to NASA, locations in the path of totality, indicated in the bad of red in the map above, include:
- Greenland
- Iceland
- northern Russia
- Atlantic Ocean
- Spain
- small corner of Portugal
Will partial view of solar eclipse be visible in Florida or any other state?
Many other places in the Northern Hemisphere will see a partial solar eclipse on Aug. 12, according to NASA, but Florida isn't one of them.
A partial solar eclipse will be visible across:
- parts of the northern U.S., from Alaska to North Carolina
- most of Canada
- much of Europe
- northwestern Africa
"Those in the U.S. and southern Canada will see only a small 'bite'taken out of the solar disk as the moon appears to just clip the sun," according to NASA.

"Atotal solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun," NASA said.
Will partial lunar eclipse be visible in Florida?
A partial lunar eclipse will be coming later this month.
The lunar eclipse will begin at 9:23 p.m. ET Aug. 27 and end at 3:01 a.m. Aug. 28.
It will be visible in Florida, although residents along the east coast may miss some of it since the moon may be low on the horizon during the peak portion of the eclipse.
Florida residents can expect to see about 93% of the moon in the Earth's shadow, according to timeanddate.com.

What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, creating a shadow across the lunar surface.
When will be next total solar eclipse visible across US?
You'll have to wait awhile.
"For the United States, the next total solar eclipse with totality crossing U.S. soil is March 30, 2033, with the path running through Alaska," according to AccuWeather.
The next total solar eclipse visible in the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044, according to NASA.
Florida in prime location for 2045 solar eclipse
On Aug. 12, 2045, a total solar eclipse will be visible over almost all of Florida, according to NationalEclipse.com.

The maximum duration of totality for this eclipse will be 6 minutes and 6 seconds, according to NationalEclipse.com.

- Louisiana
- Mississippi
